Description

Nothing about that day was planned.
It started in the afternoon with a guitar and ended at sunrise with a river made of gold.
Bruno plays like a canbaz, a daredevil — like somebody driving a sports car, taking the curves too fast and never losing it. Coming down to the river, past the market, Bento sang Coldplay. I used to rule the world. Behind him, in the square, Henry the Navigator with the world at his feet, pointing where the ships should go. Nobody looked up at the statue.
Then a band started to play, and I saw a hand inviting me to dance. I doubted my doubt and held the hand. I left myself in experienced hands, with the music, by the Douro.
Five glasses on the table, from pale gold to almost black. Then the night, the bridge, the two blue orbs. And with the sunrise I looked at the river and it was shining gold. D-ouro.
The wine from the Douro did not survive the sea. So they put brandy in the barrel so it would survive the journey. The sugar stayed inside.
The sweetness was an accident.
