I found this coin at a market in Europe. Small, silver, almost forgotten. I held it in my hand and felt the weight of something much larger than metal…
1946. The world had just survived its deadliest war. Indonesia had already declared independence the year before — and yet here was this coin, minted by the Dutch as if nothing had changed. On one side — the royal lion, sword raised, four centuries of power pressed into silver. On the other — Queen Wilhelmina’s portrait, ringed by Aksara Jawa, the ancient Javanese script the Dutch included to say: “we understand your culture, we respect you.”
But the people whose language circled that portrait were already fighting for their freedom. Already gone. had already declared independence and was fighting to be free. The coin was minted into a world that no longer existed.
Two languages. Two worlds. One small coin holding the tension between them — pressed together in silver, frozen in 1946, still speaking today.
