Brugse Zot – “ Bruge Fool”
I was curiouse about the story of the beer and here it is:
The Legend of the “Brugse Zotten” (Bruges Fools)
it said that, In 1488, the citizens of Bruges were unhappy with the strict rule of Emperor Maximilian of Austria. They revolted and held the emperor captive for months. Upon his release, Maximilian took revenge by banning all festivals, fairs, and celebrations in the city. To appease the emperor and regain permission to host their events, the people of Bruges organized a massive party in his honor. They also asked his permission to build a new zothuis (a “madhouse” or mental institution) Legend says Maximilian replied, “Close all the gates of Bruges and you have a madhouse!”. From that day on, the people of Bruges were jokingly nicknamed “Brugse Zotten” (Bruges Fools).
