It started in Urla, in Özlem’s wood-fired kitchen, with the smell of wood fire and olive oil in the air. My dear friend Filiz Ozkan taught me that cooking is never just about food. It is about presence, generosity, and the ancient human ritual of feeding someone you love.
When life took me to Kuwait, I carried that lesson with me. There I met Meltem — a Turkish woman who had made Kuwait her home. Two Turkish women, one long dining table, and an open invitation to cook, share, and connect.
In October 2017 we set that table for the first time. What happened next changed everything.

The goddess never left.
She’s been in the kitchen all along.
Before there were temples, there was a fire, and a woman keeping it.
Anatolia called her Kybele. Greece kept Hestia’s hearth. Every language since has kept the same secret in one sentence.
The heart of a house is the kitchen.
So when a woman follows her husband across the world — on the visa she is called an “accompanying spouse.” As if she came along.
Look again. She came carrying the fire.
An entire country’s kitchen. Its feast days. Its grandmother’s hands. She is not the one being supported. She is the support. The one who turns a posting into a home, strangers into people who have eaten together.
In 2017, in Kuwait, I set one long table — and asked these women to stand at the head of it.
Cultures stopped explaining themselves. They simply fed each other.
At a table, nobody judges.
Everybody carries something.
Magic starts in a kitchen when someone cooks with love. It always did. We just stopped calling it what it is — the return of the goddess, one apron at a time.

Every “accompanying spouse” is an unappointed cultural attaché — carrying her people’s most generous invention, the table.
Cultures don’t meet in conferences. They meet at dinner. They don’t understand each other through explanations. They understand through second helpings. Judgment can’t survive a shared meal — it never could.
The heart of a house is the kitchen.
The heart of the world is a table long enough for everyone.
The goddess never left. She was setting it — in you, too.
